The Holistic Health Practitioner Program has been redesigned to include the Natural Spa Training Program given the recent dramatic growth of the spa services industry. This program involves two streams of study: 1) Holistic and Energetic Studies (863 hours) and/or 2) Natural Spa Therapies (525 hours). Each stream shares Core Fundamental Courses which are common to both, and then has specific areas of study for each stream.
Created in 1994, the Holistic Health Practitioner Program was the first complementary and alternative health care program to be developed in Canada and continues to the most comprehensive and inclusive program in the country. With the designation of C.N.H.P. (Certified Natural Health Practitioner), and the possibility to obtain separate certifications in Aromatherapy and Reflexology, graduates of this program have the best opportunities to find exciting work in a constantly growing marketplace.
Over the past 20 years, we have witnessed incredible growth in complementary, holistic and spiritually based methods of healing. A survey by the Toronto Star in 2000 found that 75% of Canadians use some form of alternative health care and spend about $3 billion annually on such treatments. Of the 16 medical schools in Canada most now offer courses in Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM). Courses given at Transformational Arts are part of the Complementary and Alternative Medicine distance program at the Michener Institute at U of T. Holistic health is becoming widely accepted by mainstream society as a renaissance in health care is occurring in North America. Individuals are more willing to take responsibility for their health through preventative and holistic approaches. Given declining Medicare budgets, this is an important and necessary move.
Over the past 10 years, the spa industry has grown at exponential rates in Canada. While there is a proliferation of high-end medi-spas there is a growing trend for spas focusing on natural therapies with natural, organic ingredients. To that end, Natural Spa Therapies have been added to our Holistic Program.
With large numbers of people pursuing holistic and spa treatments it is indeed an opportune time to study and become gainfully employed in this field.
