Group Psychotherapy Certificate Course

Group therapy provides clients with an opportunity to work through their problems in an environment where they receive support not only from a therapist but also from their peers. It is also a way that people can build their communication and interpersonal skills, and learn about themselves through the eyes of others. The support of the group encourages an individual to experiment with new and healthier ways of being.

This experiential course will combine theory and practice. Students will participate in group therapy as both client and therapist in the classroom setting giving them first hand experience of the group process.

This course will examine:

  • The natural stages of group
  • Short term versus long term groups
  • What to consider when creating specialized or themed groups
  • Specific themes such as anger management, domestic violence, bereavement, divorce and coming out
  • Classic psychotherapy versus psychoeducational groups
  • Cultural diversity and gender issues in group
  • Guidelines for creative group therapy
  • Ice breakers and exercises for group cohesion
  • How to use Gestalt therapy to create a dynamic group involving all participants
  • Case examples of presenting problems and therapeutic solutions
  • Using psychodrama and role playing to deepen and intensify the group process

  • Conflict resolution/mediation skills
